{“title”: “DET NYE SYDHAVNEN” THE INTERSECTION OF UTILITARIAN- AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE”},
    {“location”: “Sydhavnen, Copenhagen, dk.”},

    “description”: [

Utilitarian architecture prioritizes function over form. The engineering behind industrial buildings creates an aesthetic expression dictated by function. Using mathematical proportions and raw materials their beauty lies not in ornate design but in the power of its function.

The contemporary architecture of ’det nye Sydhavnen’ emphasizes livability, with a focus on creating a sustainable and community-oriented urban environment. The neighborhood is modernist in its functionality but it carries a more contemporary aesthetic expression.

The former harbor area has historically been characterized by heavy industry. In the early 2000s the municipality of copenhagen was looking to transform ’det nye Sydhavnen’ into a residential area. An architectural masteplan was laid out; the residential development has since been implemented in a series of large scale projects.

This project explores what happens when the utilitarian remnants of the industry meets the aesthetics of contemporary architecture.
